Participants from the Japanese shipowner Toyo Construction, which recently took delivery of the vessel Discovery from VARD’s yard in Tomrefjord, were the first to attend the new training programme. The course included one day of theory and practical training at the facilities in Molde, followed by two days of hands-on training on board the vessel in Tomrefjord.
– This first customer course is an important step for Brunvoll Academy. We want to give our customers even better training and support in the operation and maintenance of our systems, says Erling Brunvoll, Service Product Manager at Brunvoll.
The training facilities and test installation are the result of focused work that began in December 2025, Erling Brunvoll and Martin Ellingseter explain. Both are Service Product Managers and have played central roles in establishing the academy.
In Molde, the Toyo Construction participants received training in the BruCon-5 system, including control levers, system menus and troubleshooting. The training also included simulations of different fault scenarios for the crew to resolve.
The training continued on board the vessel in Tomrefjord, where participants were introduced to all thruster types installed on board. The programme covered normal and emergency operation, as well as maintenance tasks such as lubrication and oil sampling. The bridge crew also received training on the control and manoeuvring panels.
The course was led by experienced instructors from Brunvoll, including Erling Brunvoll, John Sjåholm, Martin Ellingseter and Joakim Solheim. Solheim also played a central role in commissioning the vessel.

Brunvoll will now prioritise further training for internal resources, including travelling service personnel, partner companies and employees in Volda. Work is also continuing on additional course programmes, including training on the PCD3 control system.
– We see a clear need for systematic training, both for new and existing users of our solutions. Brunvoll Academy will be an important platform for this work going forward, says Martin Ellingseter.
Further customer courses are planned, together with the official opening of the training centre at a later stage.
Building Brunvoll Academy has involved many skilled internal resources who have been essential to the result. Several local suppliers have also contributed to bringing the facilities to completion, concludes Martin Ellingseter.
